San Cataldo in Capella Palatina

San Cataldo ca. 1160

Next to La Martorana the Great Admiral Maio of Bari supported the construction of San Cataldo ca. 1160, just before he was murdered in a plot hatched by the Archbishop of Palermo. The "highly ornate crenelation .  .  . is of Islamic derivation" and was probably similar to the crenelation now gone of its neighbor.
