Hoc autem obseruandum
est, quando reum publica fama non uexat. Tunc enim
auctoritate

scandalum
remouendum, famam
suam reum
purgare
oportet
This <i.e.
the defendant is completely exhonerated>
must be observed <after a decision has been rendered in court>: If the
defendant (reus) is not burdened by notoriety.
If the defendant is still notorious, by the authority of Pope Gregory he must compurgate himself to remove
the scandal.
