Southern Italy in the High Middle Ages and Renaissance

Timeline

Aragonese take control of the Kingdom of Naples 1442 and rule over Sicily and Southern Italy until 1707 By the seventeenth century Naples had a population of 300,000 and was the largest city in Europe.   Its wealth and prosperity was fed by the riches of the Spanish overseas Empire.

The Arch of  Triumph built into the Castel Nuovo commemorating Alfonso the Magnanimous' (1452-1458) entrance in Naples to begin his rule (1443)  is considered to the most important piece of Renaissance architecture South of Rome.

The French kings made several attempts to regain the Kingdom (1494 and 1501), they were not successful.

The Revolt of Tommaso Aniello (Masaniello) in 1647

Naples prospered under Spanish rule until the great plague of 1656 when the city lost almost 3/4 of its population.
