Gratian the Lawyer?
August 31, 1143 Cardinal Goizo, legate of Pope Innocent II rendered a
decision on tithes.
Et ideo abito consilio patriarca Aquilegiensis et episcopi Ferrariensis et
magistri Walfredi et Graciani et Moysis et aliorum prudentum. condempnavit
prefatus Goyzo cardinalis episcopum Tervicinum in restitucione possessionis
predictarum decimarum quatuor villarum.

Noonan, "Gratian Slept Here" 171:
"It is tempting to say this Gratian is our Gratian. Kuttner has suggested
the identification. To accept it is to presume that there were no other
prominent lawyers of that name in those parts at that date. 'Gratianus' is
not so rare a name that this presumption is certain. But we can say that it
is possible, even plausible, that the unbiased notary who recorded the scene
at S. Marco is the only person to have left an eyewitness account of
Gratian."
