The Real Colegio de España was established in 1364 by the papal legate Gil Álvarez Carrillo de Albornoz (1310-1367) to house Spanish students who came to Bologna to study law, theology, and medicine. The Colegio still maintains itself on the endowment established by the Cardinal and today houses around 15 Spanish students who study at Bologna in all academic areas. They are known today, as they were in the past, as "los bolonios." |
