Gray was the first justice to hire a law clerk (with his own money)


On SCOTUS Gray sided with the majority in Plessy v. Ferguson to uphold racial segregation.

In Edmund Jackson v. Wendell Phillips Gray denied Edmund Jackson's and his relatives' claims and converted the trust into an education charity for former slaves with the purpose of bettering their living conditions.  His justification was cy-près.
