Boniface VIII  Agnani

Papal Judge Giovanni de Pogiali during the Pontificate of Pope Boniface IX 18 July, 1399

.  .  . non invenit contra ipsum Salomonem fore iuridice et legitime probatum, videlicet quod ipse talia verba protulerit aut alia supradicta commiserit vel fecerit, considerans fore melius facinus impunitum relinquere quam innocentem condempnare . . . declaravit dictum Salomonem de verborum predictorum prolatione et aliorum premissorum perpetratione fuisse et esse innocentem (Giovanni did not render a decision against  Solomon because his guilt was not legally and legitimately proven, namely that he spoke the words or committed the deeds of which he was accused.  Therefore it is better to leave a crime unpunished than to condemn an innocent person.  .   . Consequently Giovanni declared Solomon innocent of the crimes for which he was accused)
